The Kitsune King smiled at Max's eagerness. It seemed he would really enjoy working for the king. "I need you to find someone for me, and you'll have to follow him undetected for several days. Either that, or befriend him and gain his trust, but I think the first would be easier. I've heard rumors that he was doing something that I told him that he could not or he would lose the support I am giving to him, and I need to make sure that he is still on the right track. However, I doubt he would tell me outright and risk my displeasure, so tracking him will be the only way. It's all written down here." he said, pushing a piece of paper in front of Max. "I will supply you with enough funds to keep you fit for a month, though you may not need that much time, and whatever else you would like, or have need of. I can tell that you are very self-sufficient, and I don't mean to insult you, just know that my services are yours."

He read the paper carefully, eyes narrowed as he scanned. Eventually he nodded. "I think I'll be fine. I can't really carry anything if this is a following mission, best to go with the clothes on me." He tapped the note absently. "I think I should be able to pull this off. Is there anything other than what's on this note I should be aware of?"
His eyes met the king's own. "If there isn't, I think I should be able to pull this off with, hopefully, no difficulties."

The Kitsune King smiled at Max as he evaluated the letter. "The only thing more that I can say is be wary of him. He is clever. I'm sure you will be able to manage though." Leaning back in his throne, the king wondered about the assignment he was sending Max on. It would be a test of the young Fox's skills, though if he had momentarily caught Siren, he would seem to have skill enough. After a moment, he reached into one of the large pockets of his robe and pulled out a small bag of coins. "This should suffice?" he asked, passing the bag to Max.

Max lifted and lowered tbe bag a couple of times, then smiled widely. "I think it shall. As for his cleverness, I try to have backup plans. As a hunter, one always tries to have backup plans, because things always seem to go wrong at the worst possible time."
He chuckled. "Basically, all the time. Like my net being burned by a mage." His tail twitched as he met eyes with the king. "I'll make sure this mission is a success. Is there anything else I can do?"

the Kitsune king smiled enigmatically as Max joked about Siren burning his net. "At this time I have no other instruction for you. If I should think of anything else, I will send word. Watch the crows." he answered, then looked up at the door. He smiled pleasantly as Siren and Jacob came into view, absorbed in conversation. When they got to the door, they looked up and a happy smile spread across Siren's face. "So you're in here! We went back to your room after we had trained a while, and found that you were not there. We had thought to let you rest some more, but it looks like you've been in here longer than we had been out." she said, looking at the spread of food in front of them. "Oh, yes, my dear Siren. I'm sorry to have worried you, but I wished to learn more of your friend, and so summoned him here early." the Kitsune king said pleasantly. "He is quite an interesting fellow, and I admire his ability as a hunter."

The young coyfox smiled sheepishly at the pair as they walked in. "I'm sorry. I usually tend to get up early as well, or sleep odd hours." There was a light chuckle. "I didn't think you'd be up either to be honest."
And I didn't want you to realise that I was waking up for an audience with royalty. A mental smirk. 'Audience' used loosely. At least now it looks like just a friendly meal and me not thinking they were up.
The smile turned a bit more sheepish. "I wouldn't be much good for training either. I tend to read or improve on my trapmaking. Such as how to trap mages who know how to use fire." His eyes twinkled, telling Siren and the King that the remark wasn't intended as anything more than humour.

Siren laughed as Max explained that he would have to learn how to trap fire mages. "Well, you could have tested some of your theories on me. At least then you would have known if they would work. And I could have shown you a few more of my tricks for freeing myself. Fire isn't the only magic I know, it's just my strongest affinity." She said, smirking. "Oh Siren, humble as always." Jacob said mischievously. "Don't forget that I won today." Siren scowled playfully. "I let you win." Jacob fired back. "Now now, young ones," the Kitsune king said, and both of them stopped at once, "Jacob, I hope you aren't getting behind in your training, and Siren, where has this behavior come from?" "I'm sorry, your highness. Jacob inspires the worst in me, I'm afraid." Siren said, her respectful air returned. The kitsune king smiled, "well, I shall teach him to be less inspiring, then." He shifted slightly, the smile on his face never leaving, "In any case, it is time for you to return home, Siren. I think Max mentioned something about making sure you don't fall into any more traps on the way out of Fox Kingdom, so I will see you both off together."

He resisted the urge to glance at the King, instead just running his eyes over Siren and Jacob, smirking slightly at their brief debate. "I had better warn you Siren, I'm likely to ask a bit about the Cat Kingdom." He chuckled. "I've never been out of Fox, so I've always been curious."
"And as I said to His Majesty, I'd like to keep you out of any more traps." His eyes laughed. "Can't have you possibly injuring yourself on the return."

Siren rolled her eyes at Max to show how ridiculous she thought the idea of hurting herself was, but she replied, "You can ask as many questions as you like. I will try to answer them to the best of my ability." She smiled at the King and said, "I think we should leave soon, however, if we want to make the border today. I would rather not be caught sleeping in your trees. Makes for trouble we don't need, even with your permission." Jacob looked less enthusiastic about that thought. "I wish you both could stay longer.." he said, "I would have liked to show you a little more of the grounds, Max." He smiled a little as he said it, trying, obviously, to be friendly. He wasn't very good at remaining hostile or distant. "Well, I'm sure Max has important things to do. But he does live in your country, Jake. Maybe you'll see him again." Siren replied, a slight mischievous twinkle in her eyes. "You're right, once again, young Siren. You need not waste any more time. I will see you both to the gate, then." the Kitsune King said as he stood. "I will wait while you gather your belongings, if you've left any in your rooms." Siren nodded and dashed off, Jacob in tow. Once she had picked up her backpack, her cloak safely stowed within, she turned around to see Jake's ashen face. "Oh, don't look so upset. It took me two days to get here. I'm not that far away." she said, as he stepped closer. Before she could say anything more he was hugging her. "I will still miss you." he replied. "I'll miss you too. You are my best friend, after all." she replied quietly as she returned the embrace. Then she broke away from him. "Hey, find a pretty girl soon, hey? I don't want you to look so lonely next time I see you." she joked, ruffling his hair playfully. "Come on, I can't keep Max waiting too long." She said, heading out the door. He followed her out of the room, and back to the King's throne room.

Max's ears flicked as he heard the pair returning. The King had given him instructions that boiled down to a repeat of 'go with Siren to the border, part ways and then track the target'. Chances were that Siren might query him on what the king spoke to him about, so he'd need to not be honest on that topic.
And of course I have to try and make friends with Jacob. Don't want him figuring it out, or getting too curious. He mentally chuckled. I suppose that means on my inevitable return, I should take him up on that offer to be shown around the palace. Might get to know him better.
He turned to look at the entrance to the throne room. "I will follow your orders, your Majesty." He murmured quietly.

"I am sure of it." The Kitsune King replied, with a knowing look. "Well, Siren, are you ready to go?" "Yes, your majesty." She replied, and bowed her head to him. She didn't think his face ever had any expression on it that didn't contain a smile, and if it did, she'd never seen it. "Well, then, I will take you both to the gates, and there we shall part." he said, starting forward. Siren quickly fell into step a little to the side and behind him. She was ever in awe of his many tails. She looked down at her own one tail and wondered what it would be like to have several more of them.

Beside Siren walked the ex-bounty hunter. Eyeing her, he chuckled as her own eyes turned to her tail. "Jealous?" He murmured quietly, voice displaying his amusement. "You wouldn't be the only one."
After all, he himself had been curious to see how life is with multiple tails. It'd certainly give one a powerful presence, if nothing else.
His thoughts turned a little belatedly to what his future would be like now in the employ of the king. For one, he'd have to be attentive to politics now, it would be expected. But he'd at least get more chance to go around, and money would no longer be up in the air.

Siren eyed Max's tail. "Well, they certainly are wonderful looking, and I am curious." she replied, "You have a nice tail, though, too. I'm curious about what it would be like to have a bushy tail rather than a sleek one, as well." she looked up at him and smiled. As a cat, it was only natural for her to be curious about many things. And envious of some of them as well. He seemed to be off in thought, so she turned her attention to the fast approaching gates. Soon they would be back in the forest. Siren wondered if they were safe from whoever had paid Max.

The young ex-bounty hunter laughed. "Well it's not as flexible as yours, but it certainly keeps me warm." He had decided to try and take his mind off the new responsibilities in case Siren began to guess what had happened. "It's always warm, and soft, and fluffy." He suddenly looked mournful. "And very heavy when wet." The mournful expression was soon broken by his chuckling. Despite everything, he was in a cheerful mood. He certainly had a story he could share with his brother if the chance arose.
As they approached the gates, an important query came to mind. "By any chance do you take the same path back? Or do you take different routes to and from the kingdom?" It was plausible that if his ex-employer had been genuine, they would send out another hunter. Unlikely, but plausible all the same.

Siren listened as Max told her his tail was warm and soft and fluffy. And smirked when he said it was very heavy when it was wet. That was one thing she wasn't envious about. Her own tail had no troubles when it was wet, but it wouldn't offer much warmth to her if she were cold. Being part cat, she didn't get cold as easily as a human did, but it wasn't unheard of. Siren looked up as he asked if she would be taking a different path to leave than she had to get there. "Well, it generally differs some, but perhaps we should take a much different path, just in case your employer hasn't given up yet." she replied. "I agree. You should take as many precautions as you can." the Kitsune King said.
